In this photo titled “Hand Punctured by Candy Stick”, photographer Liz Wolfe used photographic techniques such as a close-up view, contrast, and repetition to accentuate the irony of a severe wound caused by a candy stick puncturing a hand. Wolfe chose to photograph the subject, the hand, from close up. Choosing this viewpoint highlighted the subject and allowed the details of the action in the photo to be seen. Photographing the hand from far away may not have placed as much emphasis on the wound created by the candy stick, and certainly would not have provided enough detail for the viewer to see that the blood is actually sugar sprinkles. Without this detail, much of the irony in the photo would have been lost.
The repetition of other candy sticks surrounding the wounded hand make the candy sticks appear to double as arrows. This repetition builds on the irony by making it appear as though the punctured hand was caught in the crossfire of candy stick ‘arrows’. The candy and the grass are colorful and bright, and the contrast of the green and healthy grass against the pale hand mimics the contrast between life and death and emphasizes the lifelessness of the wounded hand. The contrast also makes the “blood” appear vibrant against the hand. Wolfe also contrasts the straight lines of the candy sticks to the curved and unpredictable blades of grass, as well as the spirals on the candy sticks themselves and the curves of the hand. The use of contrast, repetition, and a close-up all work together to create the irony within the photo. Without each element, the image would not have appeared as striking and visually interesting to the viewer’s eye.
